Family Friendly Workplace

 

The Family Friendly Workplace Awards were started in 2003 by the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s (former) Early Childhood Development Commission. After 20 years at the borough the the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce agreed to continue the program starting in 2024. 

 

The commission started the awards as a way for employees to thank their bosses who support them and their family. Family friendly workplaces are employers who recognize the importance of parents spending time with their children, adult children providing care for an elderly parent, families of choice supporting each other, or even allowing time off for the animal members of the family. 

 

The employers benefit because their employees are happier… a loyalty is built.  It reduces turnover and employee absences and workers are more productive. Employers get recognition at the award ceremony, in the newspaper, window cling that advertises their nomination and the winners receive a proclamation from the borough mayor.
