Science for Alaska Summer Series: Ash-tounding Eruptions: The Science Behind Alaska's Volcanoes

Summary:
Alaska is home to over 140 volcanoes, more than 50 of which have been active in the last 300 years! That’s a lot of volcanoes! But why does Alaska have so many? And what hazards do they pose to Alaska? In this talk we will explore these questions and more – including how these volcanoes are monitored, notable past eruptions, and an update on recent volcanic activity.
 
Biography:
 
Claire Puleio is PhD student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where she studies volcanoes using a variety of techniques – including remote sensing, modeling, gas geochemistry, and petrology. Claire completed her Bachelor of Science in Geology at Union College and her Master of Science in Geology at Washington State University. She began her studies at UAF in 2021. Outside of her studies, she enjoys being outside biking, hiking, skiing, and on the river and spending time with her dogs.
