The first Golden Days Committee was co-chaired by Wheaton (Doc) Blanchard & Don Pearson and the first parade Chairman was Bob Hastings. To commemorate Felix Pedro, who discovered gold in this area, and to keep his memory alive, the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce and Pioneers Igloo #4 sponsored the first ever “Golden Days” in 1952.
It was not uncommon, in fact it was expected during the Golden Days celebrations, for men, women and children to dress up in “olden days” dresses, and a few of the younger ones in the can-can outfits.
The marshal and the gunfighters, the midnight sun marshals and madams and many other familiar figures come into the limelight and the week known to us now as Golden Days climaxes with the largest parade in Alaska and the rubber duckie race (though the duck race didn’t begin however until 1988).
